In different parts of the country 12 national law schools are there. Students willing to pursue a career in law join these institutes from all over India. Till the year 2007 each of these national law schools conducted their own separate admission tests. This was very expensive and inconvenient for the aspiring candidates.
To deal with the inconvenience the University Grants Commission, Ministry of HRD and the National Law Universities jointly took an initiative to conduct a Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) for admission to these law schools.
The seven national law universities signed a memorandum of understanding in 2007 for CLAT. These universities are NLIU, WBNUJS, NLSIU, NALSAR, HNLU, GNLU, and NLU.
The following national universities are also participating in the test in the year 2016:
• Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, Punjab
• Chanakya National Law University, Patna
• Dr. Ram Manohar Lohiya National Law University, Lucknow
• National University of Advanced Legal Studies, Kochi
